Heino Sõna has, over the years, educated an entire ensemble worth of students in the fine art of Estonian kannel playing. This ensemble has lately been on the stage at every Sabatants. This time around, Heino will pass on the torch to his students and let them play for dancers on their own.
Being the contemporary of Erni Kasesalu, Heino plays with a similar technique – the chords are plucked with fingers of the left hand. Heino’s repertoire, which he has passed on to his students, consists of folk songs and dance tunes, as well as older polkas. He is often asked to play at birthday parties and other events, accompanied by a bass player.
