At Sabatants, Eva Väljaots will play the diatonic village kannel (‘külakannel’), which belongs to a newer Estonian kannel tradition. She learned to play it with the grand old master of the Estonian külakannel – Heino Sõna, and has been searching for her own playing style by listening to the music of Finnish and other Estonian players. At the festival, in addition to Heino Sõna’s music, she will play her favourite pieces from the repertoire of Heino’s predecessor, kannel virtuoso Aleksander Parkja.
